Blog Post Week #10

   1. What did you do in lab today?

In lab this week we focused on what a rock really is, as well as going over our videos we made regarding plate tectonics, and convection cells. The activity included starbursts which I had lots of fun with. It was very interesting to learn how different rocks are formed using starburst.

2. What was the big question?

The big question was, How are rocks formed?

3. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion?

In lab we focused on building on what we were discussing in lab this week. Going over the layers of the earth was very interesting. I learned that there is actually an additional layer that scientists think exists called the most inner, inner core. We also went back to our discussion about rocks. We learned how to identify each kind, as well as where they come from. It was very cool to learn about how the black sand beaches come from volcanic rock as well.

Textbook Chapter 15

1. What did you learn?

I learned about the ring of fire. I learned that the ring of fire is an area within the Pacific Ocean where there are several tectonic plates. I also learned this is where most volcanic eruptions as well as earthquakes occur in this part of the world because of the shifting of the plate tectonics.

2. What was most helpful?

The most helpful asset of the chapter was the section about hot spots. This helped me understand how volcanic activity happens. It was very interesting to learn about how the melting rock rises from the center of the earth which becomes magma.

3. What do you need more information on?

I need more information on tectonic plate boundaries and how they got to be where they are today.

1. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have?

No questions this week!
